Why I became an injury lawyer

Recently, someone asked me why I became a lawyer and why I specifically represent injured folks. I’ve thought about it before, but now that I’m a father and a husband, I think it all began when I was a kid.

I grew up in a middle class  family in the Louisiana. It was my mom who was a nurse, my dad who was a forester, me, my little brother who is a few years younger than me, our dog Colonel, and whatever little critters, snakes, and turtles dad would being home as temporary pets before we released them back to the wild. We didn’t have a lot of money, but I don’t think I’m unique in saying my parents worked their tails off to make sure my brother and I wanted for nothing.  Even though money was always tight, my parents never let us know it, and at the end of the day we had each other.

I remember when I was maybe 10 or or so, my mom went to the store to run an errand. I remember she asked me if I wanted to come with her but I said something along the lines of “ummm I’m playing video games!”. So I stayed home. I don’t think I even realized how much time went by, but eventually my dad (who is a man of famously few words) came home said we need to go to the hospital right now. I don’t remember if he said if it was about mom or not, but I knew it was serious from his tone.

We get to the hospital room where my mom was and I remember seeing her hooked up to all types of machines with wires and tubes going everywhere. She was severely injured, and above all else I was frankly just scared. Scared for what happens next and scared for my mom. I felt helpless that I couldn’t help her, and I don’t think I remember seeing my dad cry before that day. She had a long recovery, and still bears the scars and lingering issues from that collision.

The strangest thing was that being in hospitals before that day was almost second nature to me. When dad would be away on assignment, mom would take me and my brother to the hospital with her on her night shifts since we didn’t have child care. It was actually pretty cool because we would do homework workbooks and meet her nurse and doctor coworkers! We would essentially spend those nights in patient waiting rooms. We were kids and we just you know, made it work.

Ill never forget how surreal it was to go to a hospital not to spend the night doing homework and eating oatmeal with my mom on her breaks and meeting the staff, but seeing her hooked up to those machines fighting for her life. It’s something I never should have seen, it should not have happened to me, and the insurance company should have treated her fairly. But honestly, the real thing that still irks me to this day is why the hell does that have to happen to ANYONE due to the negligent actions of someone else.

I didn’t know it then, but that incident still drives me today. I think deep down when I get through all the layers and life experiences, that car crash taught me about justice and how important it is to fight for folks who can’t fight for themselves.

That fight for justice is why I became a prosecutor. And that’s why every time I meet a client whose been injured due to no fault of their own, I think of that story and how these folks must be feeling, and I fight like hell to get them the justice and financial compensation they deserve.
